Leon County Schools Budget Cuts: Email and Letters Slashed, Parents Asked to Use Telepathy and Gossip

Much has been made in the news the past few days about the pending budget cuts in the Leon County School System. Sadly, it appears the effects of these cuts may already be taking place. Apparently, the school can no longer afford e-mail or letters to parents. How do I know? Well, here you go.

A member of the staff at Swift Creek Middle School solicited sex from a student of the school. When the student reported this to the administration, the person was removed from the grounds while the investigation continued. This happened on May 6th. Some 11 days later, when the investigation revealed sufficient evidence to arrest the perpetrator, the Leon County School Board terminated the staff member's employment. So far, so good.

However, even as I type this note, over a week after his arrest on the charges of soliciting sex from a student, the school STILL has not notified the parents in any way. This honestly isn't even vaguely excusable. This isn't the CIA covering up some covert overseas mission, this is a public institution entrusted to protect and educate our children.

Thanks guys, I realize the real world awaits my kids, but they don't need a lesson in the 6-8th grades on how modern sexual solicitations occur, in person, via text or online. When a trusted faculty or staff member crosses that line, parents have EVERY right to expect to be informed about such an event from the school and not from the news media.

Certainly they could have sent a message upon his arrest, noting their quick response to the problem, detailing how he was removed from campus and kept away from students, and concluding with the information of the investigation turning up enough evidence to warrant his arrest and termination of employment. They would have looked to be on top of things. Instead, the silence is defeaning.

Earlier this year a student got hurt crossing the street, and we got emails and a letter from the school providing a ton of information about what happened and how the school addressed the issue. However, in this case, there has not been a single communication of any kind from anyone associated with the school or the school board. The sheer failure to communicate in this case begs one to wonder about what else the schools might be hiding.

I don't know what grade the state is going to give the school, but as a parent right now, they get an 'F' in communication from me.
